This is the second instalment in the Quilt Along 2019 to make my Happiness quilt. If you’ve just joined, please refer to Part 1 which as well as giving the instructions for constructing the first row, it also has details of the type of fabrics needed, fabric quantities, and further notes on what to do before you start the project.
Row B – Green
See Diagram 10 for the design of the blocks in Row B.
For this row you will need your green prints and white fabric.
For the centre of the blocks, cut the following:
From a green print 4 x (4.5” x 4.5”).
From white fabric 8 x (8.5” x 2.5”) and 8 x (4.5” x 2.5”)
First, sew the smaller white pieces to either side of the central green piece, and press; then sew the longer white strips to the central pieces, as illustrated in Diagram 11, and press.
For the borders, select 8 different green fabrics and cut 2 x (6.5” x 2.5”) from 4 of those fabrics, and 2 x (12.5” x 2.5”) from the other 4. You should have 8 long strips, and 8 shorter strips.
The blocks are completed by adding the borders to the centre of the block; the opposing borders are cut from the same fabric. I have alternated the arrangement of the border strips so that a block with a long border along the top and bottom is next to one with the long border along its sides, as illustrated in Diagram 10.
First sew the shorter borders to either the top and bottom of the block or it’s sides, and press, and then sew the longer border to remaining side, and press (Diagram 12).
Finished blocks should measure 12.5” x 12.5”.
Next sew the blocks together to complete the row, which should measure 48.5” x 12.5” (Diagram 13).
I hope you enjoy making the second row of this quilt – if you have any queries, please do not hesitate to message me. Also, if you’re quilting along with me, it would be great to see photos of your makes!!
Till next time,
